What You Need to Know About Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis, known as an inflammatory skin condition, typically begins in infancy or early childhood. Triggered by genetic factors or certain allergens, this skin disorder can recur throughout a person’s life and has seen a notable increase in recent years.
According to dermatologists, there are three main types of dermatitis classified under "dermatitis":
-
Atopic dermatitis (Atopic eczema)
-
Irritant contact dermatitis
-
Allergic contact dermatitis
The most common symptoms of atopic dermatitis include dry skin and intense itching, which can also lead to sleep disturbances and fatigue.
In infants and young children, symptoms often appear on the face, inner elbows, and the back of the knees. In older children, adolescents, and adults, the condition typically affects the hands, neck, inner elbows, behind the knees, and around the ankles. This dermatological issue may present as dry, red, flaky, or oozing lesions. The best way to manage it is to follow a treatment plan prescribed by a doctor and to support this treatment with the use of appropriate dermocosmetic products.
As the condition is chronic and prone to recurrence, it is important to manage stress, maintain a healthy diet, and be selective about skincare and cosmetic products. Research shows that fragrance-free, colorant-free moisturizers with suitable ingredients should be used daily to prevent skin dryness.
To get support for atopic dermatitis and improve quality of life, it is crucial to connect with organizations and institutions specializing in this area.
